One of the most promising days for a new born baby in India is their naming ceremony. In Hinduism, the ceremony is known as Namkaran or Namakarana Sanskar and is conducted in an elaborate form on the 12th day after birth. In Kerala ,however, a naming ceremony is called Noolukettu or 28th and is performed on the 28th day of birth .

Noolukettu Naming Ceremony

The atmosphere of a baby naming ceremony is typically warm and intimate, with a focus on celebrating the new life and welcoming the baby into the community with love and support .To bring in this atmosphere to a baby’s noolukettu , only the parents and grandparents of the newborn along with a few close relatives and friends are invited.

As the ceremony begins at an auspicious hour in the morning, the baby is given a herbal bath. Then, the father sits on the floor in front of a lit oil lamp, carries the baby in his arms and whispers the chosen name for the child in his/her ear 3 times, covering the other ear with a betal leaf. The same decorum is again carried forward by the baby’s paternal grandparents.

After that a black thread or a gold chain called an aranjanam is tied around the baby's waist , the black thread bearing a sanctified ring made of five different metals, believed to protect the baby from evil spirits. The child's eyes are also lined with kanmashi (Kohl). A spot is drawn on one cheek or asymmetrically on the forehead with kohl also to ward off evil spirits. The child is then made to eat a mixture of ghee or honey as a base for the various foods he/she eats in the future.

There are many variations on how this ceremony is performed. Some families light a sacred fire and a priest chants sacred hymns to invoke the Gods in heaven to bless the child, while others perform an Aarti seven times with a lamp thread in a leaf.
